Portrait of Joseph

Joseph

soldier, of Nebakov fortress

“I'm a soldier of the garrison here, though these days I do nothing but stand by the lower gate taking tolls from whoreson peasants.”

Quid vis scribi? The scribe is at Vespers. Come back after, and bring him a candle.

Dicta

Things Joseph had written, latest first, with the glosses of his neighbours.

the Thursday before Whitsun, at Compline

Standa is a decent lad but he jumps at his own shadow. The captain leaves me with these boys who wouldn't know a halberd from a hayfork. They have absolutely no discipline. Christ almighty, if the Hungarians come, we'll be dead in our beds while they cry for their mothers.

  • Standa (no portrait was pasted in for this person)
    Standa

I didn't jump, Joseph. It was a rat as big as a cat under the bench.

  • Joseph
    Joseph

A whoreson rat! See what I mean? You need a few more years before you're a proper man-at-arms.

Nota scribaeThe man shouted so loudly my ink spilt. He was pointing his finger at the wall as he spoke.

the Monday after St Pancras, at Sext

The bread today was hard as a stone and the cabbage pottage is just water with green lumps. Three wagons came through the gate, full of bloody turnips. The carter tried to hide a penny. I shouted in his whoreson face until he coughed it up. Peasants stink worse than their cargo.

  • David
    David

The ale is no better. I'd give a week's pay for some of Bozhena's strong plum brandy.

Nota scribaeDictated at the lower gate. The carter he spoke of was still weeping by the wall.

the third day of Easter week, at Vespers

Andrew is still telling lies about Martinmas. He took the only good horse during the flight and rode off, leaving us on foot in the dark with the Hungarians. He's a coward, and now he tries to blame me for Denis. I couldn't have stopped it!

  • Andrew
    Andrew

I took the horse because it was bolting! You were already running the other way, you whoreson liar!

  • Joseph
    Joseph

If you hadn't taken the beast, Denis might have had a chance to run!

the Feast of St Matthias, at None

Julian had the gall to sit next to me at the alehouse today. The whoreson took the only lantern at Apollonia rocks and ran, leaving us blind. Denis would be alive if it weren't for him. And worse, Denis still owed me two groschen from dice. I'll never see that coin now. Bloody hell.

  • Julian
    Julian

The lantern was dropped in the mud when the foragers shouted, Joseph. We all ran. Stop acting like you stood and fought.

  • Prokop (no portrait was pasted in for this person)
    Prokop

Leave it be. Denis is gone. We all drank too much plum brandy.

Candlemas, at Prime

The priest came down to say the Pope wants every man's life written down for the Day of Judgment. So write this down: I am owed two groschen by Denis. The Lord should know I was cheated out of my dice winnings before the poor bastard died.

  • Benesh (no portrait was pasted in for this person)
    Benesh

You're still whining about those two groschen? The man is dead, Joseph. Let it rest.

Nota scribaeThe man smells strongly of sour ale and has not washed.
