Liber Vultuum
Liber Vultuum, volumen Kuttenbergensefol. 138v
Portrait of Paul

Paul

guard of the fortress, of Pritoky

“I am a guard at Pritoky, and I ride the roads to keep them quiet. A man hears less foolishness in the saddle than in a stone hall.”

Quid vis scribi? The scribe is at Vespers. Come back after, and bring him a candle.

Dicta

Things Paul had written, latest first, with the glosses of his neighbours.

the Monday before Whitsun, at Vespers

Standa bought the ale today, and we sat on the bench until the sun dipped. No dice, no shouting about the muster or the king. Just a good cup and a bit of peace. The garrison could learn from him.

  • Standa

A man saves his coin, he can buy a cup when it's needed.

  • Zdenyek
    Zdenyek

Quiet is well enough, but quiet won't stop the Captain putting us on the roster for the next levy.

Nota scribaeHe sat in silence for a long time before saying this.

the second day of Rogation, at None

Young Baldwin asked me again today to ride north to his mother Drahomira with a message. I told him no, same as yesterday. I have my route and I keep to it. It's a three days' ride. I am not a courier for farm lads.

  • Baldwin

She only needs to know I'm alive, Paul. It wouldn't cost you but a detour.

  • Paul

A detour of three days is a journey, boy. Ask someone else.

No man is leaving his assigned patrol. Tell the boy to mind his halberd.

the Thursday after Easter, at Sext

I have a letter in my pouch from the bailiff telling me to keep off the upper road on Tuesday, on account of the Kuttenberg magistrate inspecting the posts. I do not know why a bailiff writes a letter for a thing he could say, but I will keep to the lower road. Less trouble that way.

  • Andrew
    Andrew

The magistrate is a fat fool. He'll look at the posts and go back to his wine.

Nota scribaeHe patted his pouch as he dictated, looking over his shoulder.

the Feast of St Joseph, at Prime

Andrew and Maurice are still fighting over that tin pitcher. The noise in the barracks is enough to wake the dead. I left before they started throwing boots. Let them sort it out themselves, I have a horse to feed and a road to ride.

  • Maurice
    Maurice

He dented it, Paul. A man doesn't borrow a pitcher and give it back with a dent like a horseshoe.

  • Andrew

It was dented when I took it! You're blind as a mole, Maurice.

the Wednesday of the first week of Lent, at Compline

Zdenyek was drinking again tonight, muttering about Vashek and the mud where Vitek died. The captain needs to put them on different watches before someone takes a blade to the other. I miss Vitek too, but drinking won't bring him back from the Hungarians.

  • Zdenyek
    Zdenyek

Vashek ran. If he had held the line, Vitek would still be drinking with us. I haven't forgotten.

  • Vashek

There were too many of them in the trees. We all did what we had to do to live.
