Portrait of Richard

Richard

hired hand, of Troskowitz

“I work the yard at the tailor's house, hauling wood and mucking pigs. I try to do my work and keep the peace.”

Quid vis scribi? The scribe is at Vespers. Come back after, and bring him a candle.

Dicta

Things Richard had written, latest first, with the glosses of his neighbours.

the eve of Pentecost, at Vespers

Went shooting stumps in the woods with Richard Bell. His aim with a crossbow is something to see. If he ever parts with his groschen when Lambert comes back from Jicin, he will be deadly. Wish he would buy a cup of ale just once, sakra.

I am saving for a master-crafted yew bow, lad. A man must have his priorities.

the second day of Easter week, at None

A month and more I have watched my own iron drawknife shape the yard's wood. It is a fine blade. I paid a month's wages for it. I suppose it is good that Thomas finds it so useful for the wagon repairs, but I would not mind holding it again.

It is a fair tool, Richard. I just need it for this one last shaft, then you can have it back.

Nota scribaeHe wiped his dirty hands on his tunic the whole time he spoke, looking at his boots.

the Thursday after Laetare Sunday, at Sext

Still turning over the spring mud in the yard. Rose is heartbroken over losing her late mother Cecily's bone comb. We have not found it, and my knees are soaked through, but I cannot bear to see her weeping over it.

You are a good friend, Richard. My mother had nothing else to leave me. God reward you.

the first week of Lent, at Terce

The yard pigs broke the lower fence again. I had to mend it with bare hands and an old wedge. Would have been easier if I had my drawknife to shape the new wooden stakes, but Thomas is still using it. I suppose the peace of the yard is worth more than making a fuss.

  • Widow Margaret (no portrait was pasted in for this person)

You should just ask him for it, lad. He will walk all over you otherwise.

Nota scribaeThe lad sighed heavily.

Candlemas, at Vespers

I am a proper craftsman now. I spent my wages on a fine iron drawknife. Beautiful smithing. Thomas asked to borrow it just for this afternoon to shape a wagon shaft. It is good to help your mates.

I will give it back by Compline, lad. Do not fret.

Nota scribaeDictated at the tavern over thin ale.
